WindE Turbine Design

Updated: Feb 24

Course: ME408 Computer-Aided Engineering with Prof. Bondi

Purpose: Learn how to use ANSYS Mechanical APDL and Solidworks to design and model a turbine and baseplate

Wind turbine towers experience loading from wind pressure, the weight of the nacelle, moments caused by the weight of the blades, and gravity. In this project, my team and I made multiple iterations to our CAD model and ran many simulations to propose the WindE Turbine Tower design.

ANSYS Mechanical APDL was used to determine the natural frequencies, mode shapes, displacement behavior, stress distribution, buckling, and thermal effects on the tower design under the given loads of the assignment. In ANSYS, the turbine tower was simplified as a shell model.

The final design features a 25 ft diameter base to 15 ft diameter tip taper with three cable connections. The final report can be accessed
