Designing and Prototyping Sustainable Food Tools

Updated: Jun 26, 2020

Year: 2019

Purpose: Create a utensil that is can be sustainably manufactured

A fundamental skill of an engineer is the ability to consider the constraints, and create multiple possible solutions with limited resources and time. In Cooper’s Engineering in Designing and Prototyping class, I lead my team in producing two food tools. Given just two months and no experience, my team proposed a 3-in-1 eating utensil and a 2-in-1 fisherman’s knife. By combining the functions of the classic fork, spoon, and knife, we can cut down on the number of plastic utensils that are manufactured and thrown to waste.

The Splayd (spoon-fork-knife combination)

  • Designed in AutoCAD

  • 3D printed in PLA

  • 3-in-1 utensil

The Fisherman's knife (allows for descaling and cutting fish)

  • Designed in AutoCAD

  • 3D Printed in PLA

  • Casted with aluminium

  • 2-in-1 tool
